Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a holistic approach to handling pest problems that considers the bigger picture. Rather than relying on just one way to control pests, IPM combines different strategies to effectively identify, understand, and tackle these issues. The foundation of this program is careful design and preventive measures, with science guiding its development for long-lasting solutions.

IPM uses a series of evaluations, decisions, monitoring, and coordinated responses. This approach is flexible and adaptive, meaning it adjusts based on what works best in different situations. The IPM Program prioritizes safety through responsible practices by finding the best mix of methods to manage pests while minimizing risks to people, property, and the planet.

Preventive actions are a critical component of our IPM techniques. As a first step in controlling pests, the IPM program focuses on stopping them from arriving and spreading. County Departments monitor for pests and collaborate with experts to quickly identify them and decide on the best response.  The IPM Program emphasizes more natural methods like cultural, mechanical, and biological controls, using chemicals only if necessary. The ongoing process of adapting and refining our approach helps create a resilient pest management program that works sustainably over time.
